Serve content from external source
Store the summary/abstract, etc in Zope but be able to source the content from a external source, such as CloundFront.
I suppose it could work like the css registry does in 3.2 = enter content or url.

Will this also take care of the situation where a company has a documentation drive full of office documents that they want displayed and indexed in the plone site?

The currently proposed idea for Plone 5 is to have a so-called "content proxy" tile (better name needed, obviously ;) that can pull content from an external location. This would probably solve what you are asking for.
